Week Beginning 5.3.2018







After a really snowy week it seems like Spring is finally on its way as the days become longer and warmer (slightly).

It was good to hear the children talk about their adventures in the snow, sledging down the hills in the Heath and building snowmen.

This week we had A LOT of catching up to do so we have worked incredibly hard.

We started by reading the story 'One Plastic Bag' by Miranda Paul. This is a true story about women in The Gambia finding creative eco ways to recycle plastic bags.

We acted out the story and each day wrote a different part in our books: the beginning, the middle and the ending.

 

 

As you know this weekend is a very important one as we celebrate Mother's Day. So we got busy and baked some special buns.... 

 

 

 

 

mixed it al together, baked, decorated them and........................

Beautiful cakes ready to be handed over to our special guests on Wednesday morning!

We have also managed to make a card for our lovely ladies, take a look:

 

 

 

 

We have joined the rest of the school in 'Grow Your Own Potatoes' competition and have planted the seeds in special bags. All we have to do now is wait and when the time will come harvest the crop.

In Maths we have collected information in a tally chart and created a pictogram showing what type of litter we found around our school. 

Crisps wrappers were the most popular rubbish whilst glass was the least popular.  

 

Continuing with our eco theme, thank you to everyone who has donated 'plastic rubbish' for our art afternoon this week.  With a little help Mrs Webb and Miss Welby managed to sort it into the right boxes for the different teachers...

 

''I'll take the lids to Mrs Jenkins, you take the yogurt pots to Mr Balls.'

 

 

 

We had a lovely time Friday afternoon using them to create all sorts of wonderful things.

 

 

We have also completed a lovely writing activity, retelling the story of One Plastic bag and leant to count from 1-5 in Wolof, just as Isatou (from our book who may do this, when she is crocheting her bags.)

 

 

We have also enjoyed some interactive games learning how to recycle all of the different kinds of rubbish.

 

'I think the newspaper goes in the paper bin'.

 

Finally, HUGE excitement this week as work as started in our outdoor area, watch this space.

Snow!!!!

Ah-ha a-oh prints in the snow... Who's are these footprints and where do they go?

Wow! its cold out there...

Unless you have travelled to another country to experience this kind of weather this will be the first time for our class that you have experienced 'proper snow' and I don't think many of us grown ups can remember it being this persistent for such periods of time either.

Why not talk to someone in your family and listen to their snow stories...

Hopefully you are all enjoying different activities sledging, building snowballs and maybe even making the odd snow angel.  Both myself Mrs Storer have seen many of you out on the common with your families having so much fun.

While back in the warm; Why not have a think about what is different in your daily routine at the moment for you while the weather is cold?  Do you have to put on extra warm layers? Do you have to go out to animals and thaw water bowls?

You could write us some 'snowy news' tell us what you have been doing and bring it into school when we are back.  Remember to say your sentence first before you write it and don't forget your capital letters and full stop.

You could also play some number games...
Roll a dice and count the spots, can you say the number that is 1 more or 1 fewer?
 
Roll two dice and try and add the two numbers together, what is the total?

You could try and write these numbers, again we would love to see them when we are back in school.

Week Beginning 19th February 2018

Welcome back to the second half of the Spring Term! We hope you have had a good one and enjoyed the glorious weather.
We have started the new term with a story written by Tony Mitton: 'Down by the Cool of the Pool'.
Children listened to the story and worked on remembering the characters and their actions.
Take a peek:

"I can dance  but not like you, said the sheep. I can stamp!"

"I can dance but not like you, said the duck. I can flap"

 

 

During our yoga session children have worked on improving their favourite 'Cobra Pose'.  Just as the snake changes, we are constantly changing and transforming ourselves.  This pose is a great way to build upper body strength.

Shoulders down, neck long...

Palms stay on the ground.....

...and keep on breathing!

 

 

 

In maths we compared two set of objects and used the language of more and fewer. We picked two domino's tiles and placed them in the correct column.

 

 

We had a musical end to the week this week, following the introduction to a Glockenspiel, we decided to have a go ourselves...

 

Some of us made our own music using the magnetic letters to create a tune.  Others challenged ourselves to play Old MacDonald that Miss Welby had put on the board.

 

 

We also enjoyed listening to our new stories on CD.

 

Some messy play, what fun a tub of gloop can be...

 'Look you can pick it up and then it melts.'

 

Congratulations to Martha our Golden Book winner this week for such an improvement in your writing.  We have loved seeing how busy you have been at home too.

Week Beginning 5th February

'Kung Hei Fat Choi’ everyone! In other words 'Happy New Year...again although this time  we are talking about the one in China.

A happy new year in Chinese writing too...

This week has been an exciting one learning about a different culture and traditions.

Of course we are still keeping a close eye on the weather and update our weather chart regularly and since we had another sprinkle of snow we made the most by dancing in the snow and catching a few flakes here and there....

 

 

 

'Wow, look at this ice - it's sharp and cold'.

 

We continued our learning journey in maths and worked on measuring lengths accurately using cubes. We then compared the lengths of each dragons and worked out which one was the longest, shortest and middle sized.

 

Back to Chinese New Year and we couldn't resist trying our own Dragon Dance after reading the book in English.  We took it in turns to be the leader using our own dragon masks and managed to cooperate fantastically to move and turn without any bumps.

Finally to end the week, we couldn't forget he fact that we are not in school for Pancake Day so thought we had better bring it forward a couple of days.  We made a perfect batter and then enjoyed eating our very own pancakes. 

 

 

 

Also a whole school house point pancake relay.
