Week beginning 5.12.16

This week Class 1 have been getting very excited that Christmas is getting closer and closer.
Some of us looked through catalogues to choose the things they would like from Santa.
the Christmas play is coming together nicely and children are learning their parts and all the songs well. 

 
 
This week a special visitor came to see us and he will stay with us until Christmas.... 

Meet Gingerbread our Elf on the Shelf. Children have chosen his name and he is really pleased with our name choice.

The elf has brought us some chocolate biscuits and milk to enjoy at playtime.

 

 

Meanwhile, winter has appeared in our small world area. Snow, icicles and snowmen have moved in too.   

 

 

Welcome to all the parents who joined our share. We now have lovely small Christmas tree s to add to the decorations in our room.

 

 

 

As the week continued Gingerbread became more and more a part of our class...

 

 

 

Unfortunately he wasn't very well on Wednesday so we made him a bed and wrote him get well notes. We also made him a bedside chair and lamp using the stickle bricks.

Fortunately Gingerbread was soon well again and went off to restore his energy at the bakery.  Luckily he left us ingredients to make our own yummy cakes though-thanks Gingerbread!

 

Yummy, we can't wait to eat these...

 

 
 

Finally the play rehearsals have been polished up this week ready for next weeks shows.  The children got a sneak preview of what they all look like in their fantastic costumes.  They have also worked hard as a team helping Miss Welby and Mrs Webb to paint the backdrop for the stage.  Well done everyone, a real team effort.

Week beginning 28.11.16

'Hey Diddle Diddle' and 'Mary Mary Quite Contrary' have been our new entries this week.

We have set up a small world for the children to re-enact the songs.

 

"Are these real flowers?" asked the children

We have made Mary a wonderful garden in the outside area

Our week would not have been completed without a good bake off...so we felt adventurous enough to test a new recipe. We made apple and raisin turnovers.

As always we tested our palates and agreed they tasted REALLY good.



 

 Meanwhile leaves kept falling and our outdoor area needed some tiding up...

Jack Frost has coated most surfaces with a layer of ice and frost.

Others opted for ice soup.

We have also used our nursery rhymes again to help us with our maths, using the flowers in Mary Mary's garden to solve number stories, look at these addition and subtraction number sentences we have written.

 

 

 

Congratulations to Siena, our Golden Book winner this week for taking another huge step forward on your road to becoming a reader.

Week beginning 21.11.16

So this week has seen Little Miss Muffet and Incy Wincy spider entering the scene.
Spiders have been all over our classroom throughout the week: in the water tray, at the maths table and in the writing area....not to mention the REAL spiders in the outdoor area...!
Have a look at some of the activities we have done:

Making play dough spiders

 All children made a spider and they all looked so different. Well done everyone!

 

 

Making real and pretend cakes has all the ingredients for creative and mathematical learning opportunities, so here we are making cheese spider shaped scones.....

 

Mixing the ingredients was a sticky job..."I make cakes with my mummy at home".

Our play rehearsals are well and truly underway now and we have some budding actors amongst us.  Our children have also enjoyed our Nursery Rhyme themed role play area.

We have also enjoyed lots of other nursery themed learning in class, below are a group of children playing an Incy Wincy counting game.  Lovely team work and cooperation.

 

 

We are also working extremely hard in our phonics session, one group have learnt the 'ee, ai and oo' sounds this week and here we are using them to write words.

 

 

 

Congratulations to Lucian our Golden Book winner this week, for being such a good friend to everyone in Class 1.

 

Letters about what your child needs to wear in the play will be coming home next week.

Week beginning 14.11.16

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water...
That's right this week we have learnt yet another nursery rhyme and talked about the meaning of some of the words in it: fetch, pail, crown, caper....
The well built last week in the outside area has been used throughout the week to fetch water and filling up buckets of different sizes. This has encouraged the children to use vocabulary related to capacity such as empty, full and half full.

Fantastic independent work ordering numbered pails of water.
 
Some fantastic learning continued throughout the week thanks to Jack and Jill; in maths where we were able to use 'pails' to help us with adding and subtraction problems.
Then, in our English sessions we practised our independent writing and retold the rhyme with words and pictures.
 
Thursday and we enjoyed another fantastic visit from our friend from Blyth Woods, we enjoyed a whole school meander along the surrounding fields and footpaths to see 'Grove Piece' the new piece of land the trust will be turning into their own community woodland.  A fantastic time was had by all and we were so fortunate to get back in the warm just before the downpour.

 How many reception children does it take to reach around the tallest tree in the wood?
Answer:  Most of them.
 
We finished the week with a 'Spotacular Day', well done to everyone who came dressed in spots and thank you for being so generous, we raised nearly £130-Fantastic.
Well done to Dotty for winning Pudsey's spotty jar.

Week beginning 7.11.16

Class 1 had lots of fun learning and singing  nursery rhymes such as Humpty Dumpty and Hickory Dickory Dock....
We talked about rhyming words and wrote messages to Humpty. A few children thought Humpty shouldn't have sat on the wall...
We also used language related to time and talk about things we do at different times during the day. We are becoming quite good at reading o'clock times.
Thanks to Humpty Dumpty for being our cooking inspiration this week: egg sandwiches.

Sequencing nursery rhymes. 

 

 

In maths this week the children have been learning about time and have great fun finding out about units of time.  They particularly enjoyed our one minute challenge today, where they had to see what they could achieve in just a minute!

Thank you to everyone who helped with the building of our very own temporary well in the outdoor area.  I wonder which nursery rhyme characters might need that next week?

Week beginning 31.10.16

Welcome back to the start of the new term. We hope you all had a good break. It was lovely to see so many smiling faces in class 1 as well as around the school this week and the children are really showing an eagerness to learn which is also great to see. We have a busy term planned ahead once again! (Topic letters are in bags tonight (Friday) to keep you informed.  We have started our week with very exciting activities based on Fireworks, which have included baking Katherine wheels, cheese  and tomato scrolls, toasting marshmallows, firework maths, firework art and much more....
