Week beginning 23rd.1.2017

Another great, busy week in Class 1. We had some important tasks to carry out such as:

Making Queen Elsa her own ice palace....

Rescuing the animals from the ice (it took a long time and a lot of thinking to free the poor animals from the ice blocks)...

...making lovely wintery patterns using a variety of materials...

...cooking a warm, tummy-filling rice pudding...

...which went down a treat!

Our maths this week, we have been getting better at doubling and halving.. playing matching and sort games to help us along the way.

We completed our lovely display in class on Artic animals using pictures the children have drawn and fact books they have written.

We also did a great experiment to see how the animals we have been learning about keep warm in the freezing cold water...
Some icy cold water...

A layer of fat...

And some plastic bags...

We discovered that the finger wrapped in fat stayed warm because it was insulated from the cold. All children could feel the difference and agreed that they would rather be well insulated to go swimming in the Arctic waters.

Congratulations to Shelby, our Golden Book winner this week, for settling so well to life here at Wenhaston Primary.

Week Beginning 16.1.2017

So, this week we have literally experienced the 'land of frozen' as we have seen temperatures drop considerably...nothing can stop us going outdoor so we made the most of the icy mornings and went outside to find out more about cold weather. Exciting time had by all....

Mark making in the frost

 Pretty, sparkly frost
 What have we found here..?

Can you hear the crunch under you feet when walking on ice?

Inspired by the Anna's frozen heart we made our very own little frozen hearts using juicy strawberries and white chocolate.

They tasted amazing!

Frozen ice flakes made of stones and buttons...

Also fitting in time for our self chosen activities, look at this lovely flower picture Logan made for his Mum.

We have had lots of treats this week, Lilly kindly baked some brownies for the whole class to share at snack time.

We have also been working hard too; using Numicon in maths to help us add two numbers together.

Finally, we finished our week with our Frozen party, we saw bits of the film, we finished our Frozen art, had a good sing song and enjoyed a game of pass the parcel.

Congratulations to Lucian; our Golden Book winner this week, for some super writing and excellent adding with Numicon in maths.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Week Beginning 09.01.2017

Happy New Year to you all and welcome back to Spring Term!
The children once again threw themselves into their learning and activities with much gusto. It was really great to see everyone after a much-deserved Christmas holiday break.

Our topic this term is 'A is for...' and we will learn about the Arctic, Antarctic and Arendelle the land of Frozen...
We have started the new year learning about seasons, focussing on winter. We have an icy cave in the role play area and children have been busy writing on the icy wall and building a giant sledge.
Any more room on the sledge..?

Someone opted for a smaller version of the sledge...

And here we are cooking away a warm broccoli and cheese soup to help us keep warm .

As always the best part of the cooking session was the tasting...what a rich cheese and broccoli soup!

On Thursday morning, while looking at the globe, Logan decided he was travelling on a treasure hunt adventure.  He quickly made his map and we all wrapped up warm to face the bitter wind and go and see what we could find.

The children had a great time using the map to hunt for treasure and some enjoyed writing about it when we got back in the warm.

The best piece of treasure we found was part of a picture which, using our detective skills we worked out was a polar bear, I wonder if we will be learning about them in the near future?

Finally, after a week of waiting the snow fell and we wasted no time in getting outside to investigate...

 ''Careful it is very slippery''
''Look, you can write in the snow''

Congratulations to Evan, our Golden Book winner for this week.  He has shown great enthusiasm sharing ideas about our new topic this week.
