Wb 25.3.19

Goldilocks and the Three Bears have come to visit Class 1 this week and what a busy time they have had too.

I think probably all of the children were familiar with the text and enjoyed reading aloud with the grown up's in class throughout the week...

We then used our knowledge of the text in lots of different areas of learning

Making porridge for the bears; estimating and measuring how many cups to fill each of the bowls.

A hot seating activity, taking on the role of one of the characters and asking questions about how and why things happened.

A thinking skills problem; can you make or find or build the three chairs or the three beds for the three bears?
'Well that easy just take a chair and stack them up bigger for Mummy and even bigger for Daddy'

'I've just made Lego chairs for the whole family.'

In amongst all of our planned activities the children have been very creative in their own ideas... They made a cinema in class.

This is the screen...

We are making the pictures for the people to watch the film.

There was even a written advert for the picture...

The children set up seats and made tickets that even have to have the side ripped off so that you couldn't return without paying for another seat.
Wow! What fantastic thinking and lovely social interaction, well dopne everyone.

Friday afternoon and we welcomed lots of parents, grandparents and siblings for another reading share.

Lovely to see you all.

Finally its Congratulations to Leighton, our Golden Book winner again today for making lots of new friends and having a super week.

Weeki Beginning 18th March 2019

Another week spent working on 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'.
The children did a great job at creating the different settings from the story.

Some of us enjoyed working with wooden blocks and built an outline of their body...

As well as building with blocks children had the challenge to build words and write them in our rainbow sand.

Outdoors, we have been busy in the cave...

I wonder who these footprints could belong to?

Quick lets get out of here.

Back in class we were faced with an independent challenge; How do you get the bears across the river?

Easy, make a boat.

Other suggestions included, build them a bridge, make a bear chain so the one at the back runs across and the line gets smaller one by one each time.
Lots of independent thinking and problem solving, well done everyone.

Finally can we just say well done to everyone for being such super mathematicians this week, we have been doubling and halving numbers and the children have done so well.
By the end of the week everyone had a great understanding, that to double you need to add the same number to itself whereas to half a number, you need to cut it into two equal parts.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Week Beginning 11.3.2019

Welcome back to a new week. This time we've been going on a bear hunt with the help of Michael Rosen and his wonderful book.

Once again the children surprised us as most of them already knew the story which is often a great advantage.

We have started the week by drawing portraits of a bear. We looked at a professional bear portrait and did our best to draw our own version of it.
'I can smudge it with my fingers'.

Can you guess what media has been used to draw the bear?

In maths we have recapped on taking away. We rolled a die to select a number of counters. We then used another die to select a number to take away and then worked out the answers.

Well done everyone for checking your answers and for remembering how to take away.

In yoga we spent more time practicing those tricky poses like Dog pose:
Coming down onto our knees and hands...lift hips towards the sky
Reach out with one of the legs and pretend it is our tail. Give it a wag up in the air.

A great pose for strengthening our arms and the back of our legs. Great!

Our Maths skills have featured in our independent activities too... Not only have we been challenging ourselves to work on the subtraction problems we have been solving in class this week, but George has also remembered the addition skills he learnt last week, well done.

We have also had some more super writing this week in class, the children are really beginning to show a great understanding of how the sounds fit into the individual words and also how these words can then make sentences.

Congratulations to Herb, our Golden Book winner today for a super attitude towards your writing in class.

Week beginning 4th March

A week with a difference this time, as the whole school have taken time out of their busy topics to learn about the text, One Day on our Blue Planet...in the Savannah By Ella Bailey.

This has been a new experience for our children as it means that we have the opportunity to work with our peers from all over the school in our House Colours for two of the afternoons.

An art themed activity for Blue House in Class 1.

It has also lead to an amazing piece of writing from everyone in our Class.

This has inspired lots of independent writing and artistic creations in Class 1 too.

We have also been busy creating in our outdoor area this week, who knew you could have so much fun with funnels and pieces of hosepipe?

Well done everyone.

Have a lovely weekend.

Week Beginning 25th February 2019

Welcome back to you all! We hope you had a lovely rest and enjoyed the wonderful weather.
We started the week launching our new topic 'If you go down to the woods today...'. Children have been introduced to the story of the Gruffalo  by Julia Donaldson. It was very good to see that many of the children were already familiar with the story and enjoyed listening to it again and sharing what they new about it.

With the help of a grown up our cottage has been transformed into a cave for the Gruffalo and other woodland creatures.

A mini woodland setting has been created for the children to retell the story or make up their own version of it.

'Lets' pretend that the shiny pebbles are snake eggs.

Characters mask making has been a very popular activity.

Gruffalo characters have helped us with our maths too; we had to count the number of objects or characters and the work out the number that was 1 more and the number that was 1 fewer.

Outside in the sunshine, we have had some lovely things happening, nature detectives have been busy spotting, catching and recording all of the different bugs and birds they can find or see.

Congratulations to Leighton, our Golden Book winner today.

Remember World Book Day next Thursday, come dressed ready for a bedtime story, in your pyjamas.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.
